And then she'd met Travis Kincaid and been swept off her feet.
And he was left with nothing.
"Brooks, you know you're not supposed to have girls over without permission," Ben cautioned.
Brooks flipped his brother off as he turned his back. "Change of plans, I'll meet you by the bleachers."
Ben rolled his eyes as Brooks headed into the bathroom to begin his pre-date ritual. Kids! Ben thought grumpily as he turned back to the classifieds section.
He wasn't looking for a serious relationship, but then again... neither were any of the girls he dated.
He just had to make sure that Ben didn't find out. Glancing over his shoulder, he looked around for his older stick-in-the-mud brother. Ah! He was totally into that blonde chick. That should totally keep him distracted!
He'd had to plead with his brother to let him throw a party. He'd convinced Ben that it was his "going away" party before heading off to college and a mixed group of people had shown up - college kids, seniors & even a few adults. Brooks had figured having a few older people would keep Ben off his back!
Ben turned around, startled, "Oh yeah, it's just right around the corner."
The Vision smiled and stuck out her hand. "Amanda."
Ben blinked and looked down at her hand. "What?"
"My name. It's Amanda," she said slowly, as if talking to a child. After a long pause, she continued, "And your name is?"
Oh God, Ben thought frantically. She's talking to me. Pull it together Ben! "Ben. I'm sorry. I'm Ben!" he said in a single breath, then reached out to shake her hand. "Nice to meet you."
Awkwardly they stood next to each other. "So, yeah, just right around the corner," Ben said stupidly.
"What?" Amanda asked.
"Oh. Right." Amanda said with a firm nod. "The bathroom. Because that's what I asked you." Her face flushed to a bright red and she hurried around the corner.
Feeling ridiculous, Ben headed out to the balcony. Killing time, he gazed through the telescope.
Ben jumped in surprise and turned around. "What?" he asked.
Amanda cleared her throat. "It's a nice night. For looking at the stars."
Ben scrambled for a response.
Amanda took a deep breath and continued on. "I have a confession," she said.
"Oh? What's that?"
"I didn't actually need to know where the restroom was. I just saw you checking me out from across the room. I'd been hoping you would talk to me... so I thought of the first thing I could think of to ask you. Unfortunately, it turned out to be the bathroom," she said, chagrined.
