Downies (3) - Round 15

Gunnar went outside and was surprised to see a wolf lounging by the sidewalk.  Tenativly, he held his hand out to pet it.  He jumped back when the wolf leaped up and ran away.

Whoa, Gunnar thought.  Close call!

He didn't have time to dwell on it though.  He had someone to meet downtown.  He was digging for some news.  He wanted to try to get his finger on the crime pulse.  He was hunting down some information that would help him bring Regina down.

"I must be early," he thought to himself as he sat on the stool.  Nonchalanntly, he sipped on his scotch.

"You Gunnar?" the old man asked as he sat down beside him.

"Who's asking?" Gunnar replied.

"Just a friend.  I heard you were looking for a contact into the crime syndicate."

"I might be.  What have you heard?"

"I know a guy you could talk to you. But it'll cost you."

Gunnar hid his smile.  Easy as pie.  Gunnar slipped him some cash. "And?"

As he stood up, the old man pocketed the money.  "Go to the lounge in an hour.  He'll be there."

Gunnar didn't ask who.  It didn't matter anyways.

But, he was there in an hour & waiting.

"I heard you were asking for info," the man said as he slipped past Gunnar and pretended to be listening to the music.

Gunnar didn't make eye contact.  "I am.  I want to know days & times Empress works.  Also her security detail."

Victor nodded.  "Suppose I know that info. What's it to you?"

Gunnar shrugged.  "Doesn't matter."

Victor knew from his connections that this was Regina's son & knew that he was probably looking to settle some score.  Shrugging, he got up and walked away.  "I'll look into it. I'll be in touch."

Gunnar stayed awhile longer, sitting in place.  He couldn't believe how close he was to finishing this!

***

Gunnar stumbled home at 2 a.m. and let himself inside to crash on the couch.  What felt like hours later he heard a trash can rattle on his driveway.

Leaping up, he darted outside to see what was going on.

And found the same wolf lounging by the littered trash.

"Scat!" he yelled at the wolf.  It didn't move.  It seemed so... regal... in some ways.

"What do you want, boy?" he asked.  "Some food? I think I have some hot dogs. Or jello. Do dogs eat jello?"

Again, the dog just gazed at him eerily.

Hearing a sound behind him, he turned around to find another wolf.  "Whoa. This is getting weird," he said aloud.

"Alright! Go on!" he yelled as he stomped his foot hard in the wolves direction.

The large wolf took that oppurtunity to lunge forward and nip at his hand.

"Ow! Dammit!" Gunnar yelled before he realized it didn't really even hurt.  Glancing down at his hand, he saw that the wolf had barely broken his skin... but...

... he felt different somehow...

And somehow he felt sure that this change would help him succeed in his quest.  Standing at his balcony, he gazed across the snow covered field that led to his Mother's fortress.  A quest that he would be embarking on soon enough...
