Carters (5) - Round 14

"What are you doing here Veronica?" Tyler demanded.  "I told you... it's over!"

Veronica stormed up the walk and poked Tyler in the chest.  "I came to tell you what a jerk you're being!"

Tyler was speechless.  "I'm the jerk? How am I the jerk in this situation?"  Turning on his heel, he marched inside.

Veronica rolled her eyes and followed him.

"Oh my God! You're being so ridiculous! Stop and talk to me!"

"That's the point! I don't want to talk to you! You cheated on me!"

Veronica huffed.  "Tyler! We were dancing.  It was completely innocent!"

Tyler hesitated...  "It looked..."

Veronica rushed on. "I know what it must've looked like.  But really, baby, we were just having a good time dancing. Really!"

Tyler let himself be convinced.

"All better?" she asked in a small, pouty voice.

Roxie's eyes darted between Tyler and his fiance, Veronica, while pretending to be interested in the show on tv.  Really, this was so much better.  Drama, romance, and lies.

Oh, Roxie knew that Veronica was lying about what went on in the bedroom.  She knew that Veronica was probably fooling herself into believing that she could make a marriage work.  It was like looking at a younger version of herself.  She'd married Danny believing all she wanted from life was to be the best Slacker in the world... but she'd found out quickly that she craved the extramarital affairs.

But, it wasn't like Tyler wanted her advice.  He'd been cool and aloof since coming back from college.  She had a suspicion that he knew about her affairs, but how?

Watching the kids embrace for a kiss, Roxie made a note to keep an eye on Veronica.

Danny was unconvinced that Veronica was the right girl for Tyler.  He'd heard the rumors about what happened at Susie Hart's wedding.  Grimacing, he leaned in close and whispered, "Are you sure this is what you want Tyler? Because I'll support you no matter what."

Tyler waved off his Dad's concerns.  "No, it was just a silly misunderstanding, Dad."

Danny was still a little worried.  "Well, that's the thing. It might start out as small, innocent gestures..."

Tyler shifted uncomfortably.  Did his Dad know about Mom's cheating & just choose to turn a blind eye?  "It's nothing, Dad. I promise." Tyler patted his Dad on the shoulder and went to sit next to Veronica.

Danny watched Veronica cuddle against Tyler and thought that he would need to keep an eye on that girl. Especially since he knew how much Tyler longed for a Golden Anniversary.

Tyler threw a party to celebrate their engagement being back on.  She wanted him to tell everyone that he'd over-reacted.  Aaron kept shooting her dirty looks whenever he came over.  Man! He looked good since getting back from his vacation!

She saw Gunnar walk in and felt the tension in the room & could feel everyone waiting to see how they greeted each other.  Rolling her eyes, she kissed his cheek and told him to meet her in the other room in 30 minutes.  Then, she spent the rest of the time avoiding Aaron's accusations, making nice with Danny, and fawning over Tyler.  Exhausting!

Finally, she told Tyler she needed some fresh air and snuck around the side of the house to the master bedroom.  Peering in, she saw Gunnar walking to the bathroom.  Tapping on the glass, she waited for Gunnar to let her in.

"Thank God we have a moment!" she exclaimed.

Gunnar made a noncommital sound.  "What do you want Veronica? You made your choice the other night when you didn't show up."

Veronica pouted.  "Oh come on! Did you really expect that you could romantically spin me around the room and have everything change?"

Gunnar stared at a point behind her.  "I'm not going to ruin my friendship with Tyler more than I already have. Besides... my life's too complicated for this!"

"Too complicated for little old me?" she asked, wrapping her arms around his waist.

Gunnar grabbed her arms and pried them off of him.  "Too complicated for you."

It was hard for Tyler to get to sleep that night.  He'd noticed Gunnar had disappeared about the same time Veronica went out for fresh air.  He tried to convince himself to stop being so suspicious, but it was hard.  It was like Dad said, it all started out with innocent gestures and then grew... "No," he whispered, shaking his head.  "It's not like that."

With so much drama and tension in the house, Sarah and Anthony decided to head out to college quietly.

Tyler snuggled with Veronica after work one night, feeling impatient.  "Let's get married tomorrow, Veronica," he suggested.  "Let's just take the plunge!"

Veronica looked shocked.  "I thought you said you wanted to wait for awhile."

"I know. But, I just don't want to wait any longer!  If you love me, if you want to be together, we get married tomorrow.  Otherwise... I don't know... I just don't want to wait any longer."

Veronica pursed her lips.  "Well, put that way..."

Tyler waited for his bride to make her way to the arch.  She wasn't the smiling, blushing bride he'd pictured.  She seemed a little pale and shaky...

Veronica felt awful. She wasn't sure if it was the lobster that Roxie had tried to cook last night, but she felt so nauseous.  She wished her Mom was around to talk to!

Danny shook his head.  "I can't help but feel like he's making a mistake, Roxie," Danny confided.

Roxie shrugged.  "He's a big boy. He can take care of himself."

Danny was dumbfounded.  "That's your son we're talking about! You don't care about his happiness?"

Roxie shrugged again. "Of course I do, but he's going to do what he wants."

Danny stared at his wife and felt an overwhelming sadness.  He'd had such hopes for their lives and everything had fallen short.   He hoped that Tyler wouldn't be sitting in this exact spot years from now feeling short-changed.

Veronica laid wide awake in bed, turning over the events of the last 24 hours.  She heard Tyler creep in after the celebration was over. Quickly she closed her eyes and pretended to sleep as he slipped in behind her.

It just didn't feel real... none of it...

  2. They're both 3 bolts for each other, so I'm hoping it will work out okay, especially since Tyler's want is a Golden Anniversary.
