Carters (5) - Round 14
Veronica stormed up the walk and poked Tyler in the chest. "I came to tell you what a jerk you're being!"
Tyler was speechless. "I'm the jerk? How am I the jerk in this situation?" Turning on his heel, he marched inside.
Veronica rolled her eyes and followed him.
"Oh my God! You're being so ridiculous! Stop and talk to me!"
Veronica huffed. "Tyler! We were dancing. It was completely innocent!"
Veronica rushed on. "I know what it must've looked like. But really, baby, we were just having a good time dancing. Really!"
Tyler let himself be convinced.
"All better?" she asked in a small, pouty voice.
Oh, Roxie knew that Veronica was lying about what went on in the bedroom. She knew that Veronica was probably fooling herself into believing that she could make a marriage work. It was like looking at a younger version of herself. She'd married Danny believing all she wanted from life was to be the best Slacker in the world... but she'd found out quickly that she craved the extramarital affairs.
But, it wasn't like Tyler wanted her advice. He'd been cool and aloof since coming back from college. She had a suspicion that he knew about her affairs, but how?
Watching the kids embrace for a kiss, Roxie made a note to keep an eye on Veronica.
Tyler waved off his Dad's concerns. "No, it was just a silly misunderstanding, Dad."
Danny was still a little worried. "Well, that's the thing. It might start out as small, innocent gestures..."
Tyler shifted uncomfortably. Did his Dad know about Mom's cheating & just choose to turn a blind eye? "It's nothing, Dad. I promise." Tyler patted his Dad on the shoulder and went to sit next to Veronica.
Danny watched Veronica cuddle against Tyler and thought that he would need to keep an eye on that girl. Especially since he knew how much Tyler longed for a Golden Anniversary.
Finally, she told Tyler she needed some fresh air and snuck around the side of the house to the master bedroom. Peering in, she saw Gunnar walking to the bathroom. Tapping on the glass, she waited for Gunnar to let her in.
"Thank God we have a moment!" she exclaimed.
Gunnar made a noncommital sound. "What do you want Veronica? You made your choice the other night when you didn't show up."
Veronica pouted. "Oh come on! Did you really expect that you could romantically spin me around the room and have everything change?"
Gunnar stared at a point behind her. "I'm not going to ruin my friendship with Tyler more than I already have. Besides... my life's too complicated for this!"
"Too complicated for little old me?" she asked, wrapping her arms around his waist.
Gunnar grabbed her arms and pried them off of him. "Too complicated for you."
Veronica looked shocked. "I thought you said you wanted to wait for awhile."
"I know. But, I just don't want to wait any longer! If you love me, if you want to be together, we get married tomorrow. Otherwise... I don't know... I just don't want to wait any longer."
Veronica pursed her lips. "Well, put that way..."
Roxie shrugged. "He's a big boy. He can take care of himself."
Danny was dumbfounded. "That's your son we're talking about! You don't care about his happiness?"
Roxie shrugged again. "Of course I do, but he's going to do what he wants."
Danny stared at his wife and felt an overwhelming sadness. He'd had such hopes for their lives and everything had fallen short. He hoped that Tyler wouldn't be sitting in this exact spot years from now feeling short-changed.
It just didn't feel real... none of it...
